groundwave's 3rd Annual
MUSICIRCUS
goundwave, a consortium of composers and performers will present MUSICIRCUS, as first developed by composer John Cage.
A MUSICIRCUS is a way of organizing a performance. John Cage organized the first MUSICIRCUS in 1967 inviting various musicians and ensembles to perform together. Each performer or group is assigned a certain time and space within the hall resulting in several musical events happening at once, but without a given hierarchy. The set-up allows the listener to wander from event to event and to experience different styles of music at once and within a short period of time. Guest artists include:
Ryan Dorin, Michael Gallope, Andy Gurian, John Hadfield, Nina Hein, Paul Hogan, Dan Joseph, Carolyn Lord, Ana Martinez, Brian Rush, Alan Sentman, Jeff Snyder, Eric Wubbels, Liza Wu, Tamara Yadao, Chris Hoffman, Ryan Scott

Between MA and a Soft Space
a motion-sculpture movement installation
directed by Claire Elizabeth Barratt with microtonal composer David Beardsley and visual artist Lara Hanson
Between MA and a Soft Space explores the Japanese concept of MA. This word expresses the 'in between' — the silence between sounds, the space between shapes, the stillness between movements. The title is a play on the phrase 'between a rock and a hard place', meaning that one is stuck between choices that all lead to something unpleasant, and that one has no further options, Between MA and a Soft Space offers the opposite notion: one of all directions being open.
