Few substances are more virgin at time of discard. Few are whiter, lighter, more artificial, more directly descended from oil. Welcome to a house of it—polystyrene. White foam blocks and sheets radiate across ceiling, walls, and floor. Criss-crossed by channels, they evoke the towers and avenues of a city. The foam barks and squeaks under dancers' feet. In a slow rite two performers scoop up a sleeping third and brush pearls from her mouth. A couple pops up at the audience's feet like orchestra conductors to turn on each other in a Punch and Judy show. Using shins like snow plows the dancers pry loose and splinter the floor.
